Nature inspired art quilts, "Quiltscapes" reflect nature using fabric collage and thread painting. Like a traditional quilt, quiltscapes have backing, batting and a design surface that are stitched together.
The design is created with primarily cotton fabrics. Colors and shading are enhanced by the application of multiple layers of tulle and other sheer fabrics. Details may be added with crayons, dye and ink. Velvets, silks, suede and other non-traditional fabrics add texture and depth to the Quiltscape.
When the fabric layers are complete, the whole quiltscape is covered with black tulle and thread painting begins. Random quilting secures layers together, then the details are stitched with various decorative threads. One look at the back of a quiltscape brings an appreciation for the detailed thread painting. The final step before a work is finished is imbellishment of the surface with beads, ribbons and metalic threads.
